Housing and Resident Life welcomes students of all levels of ability. Accommodations for disabilities must be first directed to the Utah Tech University Accessibility and Disability Center. The Accessibility and Disability Center will then partner with Housing and Resident Life to seek a solution that will meet the needs of the student.
Service and Assistance Animals
Pets and other unapproved animals are not permitted in on-campus housing. This policy helps maintain a safe, clean, and healthy environment for all residents.
The only exception is for service animals and assistance animals (such as emotional support animals) that have been reviewed and approved as a reasonable accommodation through the University’s Accessibility and Disability Center (ADC).
Steps for Requesting An Accommodation for an Assistance Animal
The steps for requesting a reasonable accommodation for an assistance animal in on-campus housing are outlined below. All steps must be completed and final approval must be granted before the animal is brought into on-campus housing.
1. Contact the ADC: Students seeking accommodations for an assistance animal must first contact the ADC. The ADC will review each request on a case-by-case basis to determine whether bringing the animal into on-campus housing is a reasonable accommodation. Students need to contact the ADC at least seven (7) days prior to the need for the accommodation though this does not guarantee the timeline for completion of the review process.
2. ADC Notifies Housing and Resident Life: Once the ADC approves the accommodation, the ADC will notify Housing and Resident Life and request that an accommodation be made.
3. Housing and Resident Life Follow-Up: Once the Housing office receives notice from the ADC, Housing and Resident Life will reach out to the student and provide a list of required steps that must be completed prior to final approval. The steps include, but are not limited to:
- A signed “Statement of Understanding” (provided by Housing and Resident Life at that time); a completed “Information Form” (provided by Housing and Resident Life at that time).
- Documentation showing that your animal is licensed with the City of St George (dogs only) and appropriately vaccinated.
- A written statement from the animal owner authorizing Housing and Resident Life personnel to disclose the presence of their animal that is under review to pertinent individual (e.g., roommate(s), maintenance personnel, contracted service, etc.) as outlined in the Statement of Understanding.
- A meeting or phone call with the Director of Housing.
4. Final Approval: After all of the above steps have been completed in their entirety, the Director of Housing may issue final approval for the animal to be brought into on-campus housing.
Until final approval has been obtained, the animal is not yet approved to be in on-campus housing. If the animal is brought into on-campus housing prior to the completion of the steps above, the accommodation may not reach final approval and the student will be in violation of the animal policy. Please refer to the Resident Life Handbook for more information.
